We’re going to the Capital!
We are pleased to announce our inaugural <b>Communities In Schools of Kansas at the Capital event! On January 26, 2010, we will host an open house at the Governor’s Row House, 811 SW Buchanan, Topeka, Kansas from 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. Our open house is designed to facilitate collaboration and conversation about education and youth issues with old and new friends of Communities In Schools.
On the 27th, CIS leaders from around the state will meet with legislators and other state officials to advocate for the students, families, schools, and communities served by CIS. Malissa Martin-Wilke, president of CIS of Kansas, will testify in front of the House and Senate Education Committees, and a proclamation declaring the 27th as Communities In Schools of Kansas Day will be signed by Governor Parkinson.
To the people of Kansas, Greetings:
WHEREAS, thousands of our state’s young people drop out of Kansas high schools every year and many others struggle to succeed academically and personally; and
WHEREAS, high school graduates contribute more economically, have healthier lifestyles, and are more likely to lead self-sufficient and productive lives; and
WHEREAS, students who receive personalized support are more likely to achieve in school; and
WHEREAS, every young person needs and deserves a one-on-one relationship with a caring adult, a safe place to learn and grow, a healthy start and a healthy future, a marketable skill to use upon graduation, and a chance to give back to peers and community; and
WHEREAS, Communities In Schools of Kansas has served our state’s students and schools since 1995; and
WHEREAS, Communities In Schools of Kansas has a significant impact on students’ academic achievement, school attendance and behavior, graduation and dropout rates, and other important measures; and
WHEREAS, Communities In Schools of Kansas provided services to 20,664 students and 83 schools with the help of 2,274 volunteers and 580 community partners during the 2008-2009 school year; and
WHEREAS, January 27, 2010 has been designated a day of recognition for Communities In Schools of Kansas, in order to raise statewide awareness of the effects of dropouts on our state, to call all Kansans to recognize the importance of helping students stay in school, and to thank those who have already made an investment in our youth.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARK PARKINSON, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF KANSAS, do hereby proclaim January 27, 2010 as
Communities In Schools of Kansas Day
in Kansas and encourage all Kansans to support all efforts that help keep young people in school, successfully achieving and preparing for life, and to celebrate this day throughout the state.
